In 1966, Wilson Pickett released a song called Land of a Thousand Dances. It was a catchy little tune that worked its way to the top of the Billboard charts – probably because everyone could remember the lyrics. Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na, etc. was prominent in that song and it named quite a few popular dances of the day.
I ran across a list of Golden Oldies and this song was on it. That started me thinking about how many diets had come on the scene during my life time. I knew there were a lot – probably not a thousand – but more than I realized. I’ll be discussing many of them on this blog.
I did a little further research and was shocked to learn that the word diet – meaning a type of weight control – was in use by the year 1450!
Think about that for a moment. Before Columbus sailed to America; before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock; before the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were signed, people were looking for ways to control their weight – and they were going on “diets.”
Which Diet Are You on This Week?
What about you? Have you ever wondered how many diet plans, diet books or diet schemes are floating around out there? It seems that every day we hear about a new diet someone has formulated and they guarantee anyone can do it.
I know about a lot of them because I have followed them. Notice I don’t say “tried” them. When you are “trying” something there is that element of the belief that it may not work. So I don’t “try” diets. I follow them – to the letter. My experience has been like most everyone else. There’s something about that diet plan or my metabolism that don’t work and play well with each other.
Now, you’re probably thinking, “She’s just using that for an excuse. Everyone says it’s their metabolism.”
I assure you I’m not using it as an excuse for why I have been unable to lose a significant amount of weight and keep it off. Even my doctors – especially my surgeon (after weight-loss surgery) – have shaken their heads in bewilderment.
I have theories about why I’m in the same predicament as hundreds of thousands – if not millions – of other people – and I’m going to share those theories with you. I will be sharing a lot of things about the weight-loss process. Why? Because I know a lot about it. I have been there, done that and have about two dozen T-shirts to prove it.
But I’m tired of following every new diet that comes along. With that in mind, I have decided to be my own guinea pig. I know what foods I can or cannot eat. I know how food and exercise affect me. I know myself better than anyone else.
To take a well-known verse from the Bible (Luke 4:23) – “Physician, heal thyself” – I’m starting a project to figure this out for myself. Listening to doctors and nutritionists have gotten me exactly nowhere.
